Save Your Old Photos

There are billions of old photos in black and white and in color out there that are fading away. Those memorable and valuable photos can be saved  for posterity stopping any further loss. Digitizing, saving and placing on a disk will preserve them forever. Some articles on the Internet claim the current technology will soon be obsolete. Maybe so, but changing technology will provide a means to convert CD storage.  Putting the photos on a disk is the sure way to save them because computers become replaced and lose some images not transferred to the new computer. Viewing the old photos as a slide show using the built in viewer in Windows or with ACDSee software program shown elsewhere on this page is better then looking in an album. We will show you how and offer our service if you want help.

To save those old photos you will need:

* A scanner * A Software program like ACDSee * and a CD burner.

Greeting Cards

Photo of hedge displaying the cornicopia principle of photo compositionThe link above displays some examples of greeting cards created with graphic design, computer graphics and photography. The image displays one principal of photo composition--swirl or snail shell movement. It also has a bit of the "golden triangle" effect

Logos

The graphic design of logos must meet certain criteria. No matter what they depict or say, they must be able to be printed at any size without losing clarity. Logos should be able to be printed at smaller than postage stamp size or letter size and still be clear. Using a vector base program is a must to meet this criteria. The popular choice is Adobe Illustrator.

Photo Rendering

A combination of 3 photos combined using graphic designPhoto Rendering is a process of computer and graphic design used to combine two or more pictures into a composite picture. (Like the picture running through the Internet of the guy on top the world trade center as the plane was approaching)

Open a Mac Image file with PC

Yes you can. All you have to do is merely add a file extension. In Windows Explorer, find the Mac File and rename it by adding ".tif" or any other extension and the file will open in your image software. If it came on a disk or in an e-mail, you will have to save it to a file on your hard drive before you can rename the file.

ACD Systems

ACDSee Photo Software

As you go through the Candid Graphics website, you will see that digital photography graphic design and computer graphics play a large role. The link above is a source for a very good digital photo program. It is a powerful photo program for the price.

Each month we will feature some information about digital photography with some excellent tips. For November we will feature picture composition. The Golden Mean & Photography: Golden Spiral.

Next issue will look at scanning film photos.

Rename Digital Photos

All digital cameras give a photo a number for identification and remembering a number is difficult. You can rename your photos using photo software that comes with your camera. But, one program that all Windows users have readily is Windows Explorer. At the top of the explorer page is a views box. Click on the views box and select "thumbnails". You can then see all the photos in the folder. Highlight the photo name and right click. This brings up another menu where you will find "rename". Give the photo a subjective name.

What's Your Angle

Whether traveling in an exotic city or just exploring your own urban playground, if you're carrying your camera there'll be plenty of occasions when you think, "Hey, just a sec, let me get a shot of this." One way to get really memorable shots is to look for genuine cityscapes rather than street photos. This means finding a high point, whether a window, balcony, rooftop, or the like.
