John
Shaffield spent over fifty years in the business world before he yielded to
his desire to be a “Writer of novels".
Starting
as an office boy in the wholesale hardware business he rose to head buyer.
He left the hardware wholesaler to spend several years with a pipe
manufacturer. From there he joined the submarine service and served until
the end of World War II. When discharged, he returned to the wholesale
hardware business progressing through management and eventually heading up a
Management Consulting group. The consulting stint carried him throughout the
U.S. and Canada and a brief stay in South America. He eventually tired of the
constant traveling and accepted a job as C.E.O. of a furniture manufacturer
in Lexington, Kentucky.
He
was lured to Sparta, Tennessee by long time friend, J: R. Tubb, III to
assume the post of General Manager of Tubb's dimension manufacturing plant.
He retired there as President and after a brief period of inactivity opened
a retail furniture business. After twelve years of retailing, he finally
decided to full retirement. He was approaching eighty years of age when he
wrote his first novel, “The Conversion of Earl McClain” which was based in
the beautiful Grassy Cove area of Tennessee. Since then he has completed
five other novels and another should soon be in print.
In
Sparta, his five children and a passel of grandchildren and great
grandchildren surround him. “Writing is something I always wanted to do”.
“I'm thankful the Lord has finally given me time to do so”. |
